The British publishing and bookselling firm of Cadell & Davies was established in 1793 as a joint partnership between Thomas Cadell (1773-1836) and William Davies (d. 1820). The pair inherited the business from Cadell's father, Thomas Cadell the elder (1742-1802), and carried on his legacy as a leader of the London book trade. James Stanier Clarke, Church of England clergyman and author. He served for a short time as a chaplain in the British navy. He published several books relating to naval history, and in 1812 was appointed historiographer to the king.
